Good Catfishing
The hunt for catfish picked up this week bigtime. Last night, DBLDIP rang in with I believe 26 catfish...even though he was making out with the first catfish of the night, thanks to me! He kissed it like a champ! I ended with 20 points (one deduct for a sheephead). Same thing happened to Closer who ended with 12 points. So between three guys, we got 60 catfish and 2 sheep in 3 hours. All on weighted bobbers and nightcrawlers at about a two foot depth.

Yep it was a slow start for me after wiping the slime off my lips but was still able to show Doc W how its done. Next time we need to include someone else in that first fish tradition(watch out closer) Conditions should only get better with the slow water for both catfish and smallies, oh and don't forget ol sheeep for the boyz throwing the little hooks!
what areas are good for catfish...it sounds like a blast and would love to try it out
Right now about any area with some current and pools. The dam at Grand Rapids is always very popular as well as any public area working your way downstream, Van Tassell, Weir Rapids,Jerome Road, All along Farnsworth park, Rock de Beaf, all the way to Buttonwood. Its low tech and a lot of fun and a good way to enjoy a nice day on the Mighty Maumee. All you need is an old pair of tennis shoes, couple dozen crawler and my favorite crawfish(dont have to be softshells) a medium action pole and a couple of weighted bobbers(Gary carries them), don't get real big hooks or you won't get the midgets Doc W uses to boost his count. Have Fun.
thank you very much dbldip for the information. Can you describe what areas i should look for to have the best results
Look for water with a smooth surface just before and after rapids areas. The deeper water (2-4 feet) ahead of the larger breaks produces great catfish.
Can anyone tell me where to go, out at the dam, for the big flatheads? I've been out twice so far with no luck. However I did miss a fish, damn think almost took my catfish rod right in the drink. I've not ventured much further than the stairs at providence though.
From what I know on the Grand Rapids side go out to the main channel probably 50 yards or so from the damn and towards the island there is a hole guys catch them a lot. Fisherboy may want to pipe in on this since he fishes that area and knows it much better than me. Most guys use bluegills for bait also.
Hey Doc when you going to be ready to hit it again? I'm ready to pass the buck on this first fish thing.
Went down last evening. The water temp is now very warm to hot. Fishing was slow until sun went behind the trees, only got 10 cats up to 3 lb and 6 sheep which all bit on crawdads while fishing for smallies. Will need to look around for different spots because that high water back in May really moved a lot of rock and changed the layout.
Give a call sometime except Friday or Saturday night.. Have rod will travel. Not as much good eating as on the lake but just as much fun. Got my ultralight rod fixed last night & waiting.
BTW looked at river yesterday around 5 from Maumee side & water level looked good.
