Slow and Low...that is the Tempo

Pardon the Beastie Boys lyrics, but dang. Fishing sucks. I did a drive around yesterday and fished some. We didn't get anything. I only saw one fish coming in from a boat. You guys are right about the water temp being too high for this time of year. But once we get a ton of rain (who knows when that will be) there will be another push of fish. Don't worry quite yet. The fact that we had a spectacular week in March does not mean that's all we get. Pray for rain and lots of it.

Schroeder Farms is open for camping. They opened last weekend. You can pay to park down there too. Todd and Heather do a great job of running things. Give your camping money to them rather than at Buttonwood. If you pay to camp at Buttonwood you are supporting the DNR.

sorry doc but its over. Walleye dont like to spawn in 60+ degree river water. THey come in the river because it warms up 1st and now that the lake it spawning temp i feel that its over

This is all new territory because of the water temp but I would have to agree we could be screwed since the lake is spawning temp still. Only a real good flow of water will tell, and it could be a big final push, maybe.

I don't know... I still think rain will help to bring in some fish. It looks like we have some rain headed our way, along with some cooler temps. The river temp fluctuates all the time, just because it jumps up over 60 degrees for a couple days and the fishing slows down doesn't mean the run is done. It just means the conditions aren't ideal at the moment. Hang in there guys, hopefully that rain comes through and the fishing picks up. On the off chance that it is done, we still have smallmouth, crappie and catfish to look forward to. Speaking of crappie, has anyone fished the docks in grand rapids by river lures bait shop?

Hey I caught 5 fish today. BLUEGILLs. Susposely after crappies. Only used 1 minnow. 1 gill on a waxworm & 4 on a small floating fly.

Can't believe I feel like giving up on the river. May have to get to work to hit 20????

Jamming yor jimmy you dont no crap! A good rain might raise the river but the rain is warmer than the lake and river is now so how would that help. The river is far too warm for an effective spawn. The major part of the spawn will be in the lake this year where temps are still in the 40's.

Saw a dude get litterally beat to the ground today by a goose! I cant begin to tell you how fuuny that was as he was laying on his back struggling. His buddies just stood there in amazment. I can tell you that everyone in the area got a good laugh. The fishing looks to be over this year, fished 5 hours for just 1 walleye and 3 quillbacks.

Myself, Graybeard and the Birdman went down today, graybeard got 2, I got 1-first legal of year(sad) and Birdman got an appropriate goose egg. Heres the weird thing though, hitting lots of suckers but catching Sheephead! I have never caught sheep this time of year, there were a dozen of other sheep guys had thrown up on the bank there also.Birdman did get a big white perch also. But for the water to be warm enough for the sheep to move up and start feeding is very strange.

RUN=OVER

Gary might as well turn the tourny into a SUCKER/QUILBACK/CARP/SHEEPHEAD tourny cuz thats all thats gonna be in the river in the middle of april

Anonymous said...

sad dbldip that some people are so dumb to just kill a sheephead for swimming. They dont hurt anything and people just kill them for no reason

Did not fish again but was talking to a friend fishing down by the 475bridge (downriver side). Saw all kind of fish breaking water. It reminded me of WB going crazy. I doubt that's what they were however.

Also walked down to BW (Doc's Hole)which was totally empty of fishermen. For once the guys fishing the middle of the river on the rock ledge were getting nothing. Amazing! But I did see a guy leaving from the road area with 3 WE. This was around 3 so he might have been there since morning.

Hmm... That's funny. I thought fish swam up the same river they hatched from to spawn. Just like salmon, steelhead and every other fish that make spawning runs. I guess all the fish biologists must be wrong, huh. There is a cold front coming in and the temps will be back in the 50's with lows in the 30's. Cold weather will drop the river temp back down, and I believe the fishing should pick back up.

If you want to get on here and shit talk to everyone, why don't you sign in. That way we all know who the big cock hole is. Or maybe you're just to fucking dumb to figure out how.

http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/walleye.htm

found this article online and thought it was interesting. Makes you think about keeping a female instead of releasing it. Especially after the terrible spawns the last couple years. Let me know what you guys think

I think the article posted earlier by one anonymous person was terrific. Researched based evidence that clarifies what we think of as "facts" about walleye. What an interesting research study.

I get some news from Sandusky. The big thing this year to local fishermen is the building of a dam. I don't know details, but they are worried and haven't seen nearly the action as here in the Maumee River. But that news is about 1 1/2 weeks old.

Glad to see some family posts and hearing about young boys getting fish. That rocks! I'm with you dude.

Let's please remember that her at Doc Dubbya's we try to keep things on the down low. As savvy as middle and high school guys are today, there's bound to be some local young anglers reading the blog. Not to say that poor language isn't everywhere. But it would be nice to keep it out of somewhere. Like here. And simultaneously let people know that fishermen, such as ourselves, are respectful...which is more than the DNR can say.

yeah i caught 87 legals from the maumee bridge....get real on the fact you caught that many. HAHAHA nice story though...you do you that a quilback isnt a walleye right?

Jimmie jam said...

My appologies Doc.

I don't claim to be an expert in anything. But, I have been fishing all my life and have learned quite a few things about fish and how they behave. I'm kind of new to the river, and find it to be a very different fishing situation that what I've fished all my life. The maumee is a unique river, in many places it's solid bedrock and quite shallow for a river it's size. In other spots, you've got deeper holes, boulders and gravel beds. I was trying to better understand how to fish the river and know what to feel for, not how a run works or how fish behave. More than 20 years of fishing experience has given me that knowledge.

I think telling stories about assholes on the river and talking crap about the DNR is great. But when you get on here and post anonymously talking shit to everyone on the site is another. And we don't need it here.

o jimmy your so pathetic

Anonymous said...

yeah that article was interesting but the same hillybilly redneck dumbasses that cant release a fish if their life depended on it are still going to keep females no matter if the future depends on it or not

Anonymous said...

Doc quit your bitching about the dnr. They do their jo and if your not doin anything against the law then they shouldn't bother u. They brin in the money to help support the fisheries around ohio

Anonymous said...

jammin your jimmy, Your the only douche that people put down. And your the only one that has to usees profanity to prove a point. Do us all a favor and leave this site.

Anonymous said...

Yea that

Anonymous said...

Yup male or female they all taste great fried in a pan.....yumyum I will keep them all when I have to pay 40.00 for a license....if it were so wrong the dnr would outlaw it to go with all the other dumb laws!

Anonymous said...

yep why care about the population being there 10 years from now. Live for the now. Might as well just throw all your garbage and dump your used oil into the river also. Its sad how stupid and redneck most of the people that fish the run are. Obviously this dumbass isnt from ohio and could care less about this area,

Gatlin said...

I don't know about you guys but I'm liking this rain! River should go up quite a ways this weekend!

Anonymous said...

Dr. Thank you for all your useful information but out of curiosity what happens to the money when you give it to the DNR?

Anonymous said...

Let me guess you guys don't shoot does either? Wine and complain all you want but if it was really that bad to take females the dnr would not allow it. They have enough biologists to figure that out......if the fishery was in any harm they would limit the amount of females taken or allow none at all or even a slot limit. Everyone has their own opinion so quit your complaining! Everyone that fishes that river does it for the same reason to have fun regardless of how they do it everyone has their own way of doing things and as long as they are legal then who are any of you to judge?......get on your facebook and cry about it cause no one on here cares........WE JUST WANT TO KNOW WHEN THE FISH ARE BITING!

On my 13th limit of the year I t hink it has been great. Not 20 minutes limits like normal but I have limited the last 7 days ina row. The run is not over. Been doing this for 25 years and have never seen at least two pushes of fish give it time friends.
