Thirsty Thursday
With all the fish we brought in last night, I'm already thirsty! My cousin got 6. Closer got 4. The ole Doc got 7 in. Not all these were keepers. Some smaller ones. Some tail shots. But I got home a 7 pounder. I kept 3...ended up throwing back a small fish that would have measured 15 1/2". Damn it! I need to mark my pole better.

good thing you kept that 7 pound female. Not like it could have spawned 1000's of more walleye or anything

I thought the walleye were done. But it sounds like you guys have found some. I wish I didnt live so far away, I would love to come up and get a couple more. Where were you fishing? Do you think that with the rain that is headed this weekend and early next week, that it may bring in another batch of fish, or should I just go ahead and book the the charter on the the lake? The people that keep the females would be the same pieces of shit that would bitch when the limit gets lowered because the population is on the decline. Whats the difference of keeping a female walleye now in the river, ice fishing(if there was ice), or jigging out in the lake which is happening a hell of a lot more than the river. NOTHING The population cycles are ruled by the weather at spawn, the small amount of fish taken versus the overall population isn't crap. It takes both jacks and females and if you have ever watched the fish spawn you would know that numerous jacks spawn with a large female so taking those big jacks out of the population screws as much with the gene pool as taking females and lets the less robust jacks spawn creating genetically inferior fish. It is a personal choice to keep any legally taken fish and unless it is against the law to take females(which it is not) stop your bitchin.

a.) only fish BORN in the MAUMEER RIVER spawn in the MAUMEE RIVER so it doesnt matter what percentage of the fishing population it is. If you over fish the maumee it doesnt matter how many fish are on the lake
b.) fish when you ice fish dont have eggs!!! DUH
c.) one male walleye can spawn with multiple female walleyes so it isnt as big of an impact.

Wonder what is in those fish caught in Oct, Nov & Dec off the piers? Sure looks like eggs to me.

yep just wait and see fisherboy either this year or next that limit will drop on both walleye and perch and i will be laughing my ass off and you will be bitching it up with doc and dbldip. I dont know why they would keep dropping the limit. Maybe cuz the population keeps dropping. Not saying the population drop is all over harvest and keeping females but it definitely doesnt help
A legal fish is a legal fish! I spend a lot of time and money fishing the run, if I wanna keep a female it shouldn't be a big deal. Just shut up and fish. Got #50 today. Felt great, not bad for a "bad run"

although jaris is being a doucher...he kinda does have a point...yeah its legal to keep one but the fishing population has gone down dramatically the last 10 years and overfishing is one of the causes.
Hey Jarass, maybe you should take a class, Fish Biology 101 since you don't know shit. Lets see walleyes don't have eggs in them during ice fishing in winter, do you think the eggs just magically appear March 1? Maybe you have never caught a walleye through the ice, maybe you have never caught a walleye at all and are a PETA freak.? If you knew anything about the run in the river then you would know there are several sub populations of walleyes that spawn in the river from areas besides Lake Erie. I don't care if the DNR change the limit if they feel its necessary, and if you think the few females that are kept in the river is the cause of lower overall fish populations then you are a bigger idiot then you sound. Its all about the weather and if the conditions are favorable for a successful spawn or not period. If fishing the run is such a bad thing for conservation then the DNR should shut it down completely but that will never happen because $$ is the controlling factor. The DNR wants the extra revenue just as bad as the businesses. For someone to make the comments you make without knowing us just shows how ignorant you really are.

The only reason jarridiot doesn't keep females is....he uses 1 ounce leadheads and can't land them when he is snagging them in the tail and back. Sorry still venting from the morons I saw today by shroeders unhooking under water and puting the fish on stringers which for some odd reason were tied around there ankles. Little fishy to me! Nothing like a bunch of fishermen bitching. I say to each his own whether you keep a female or don't. I do. It's stupid to think it effects the population to any measureable effect. It's the weather which determines the hatch.
Yes I know the catch rate is going down on the Maumee. Could it be because there are 2, 3, 4 or ?? times the number of fisherman after walleyes. It would be interesting to know the total catch for the last 40 years. (It might be available somewhere.)
Hope I get a big Fish Ohio hog the next time I go fishing. If so, I'm sure the fish will be a female.

The way evolution tends to work, you would think that the whole idea of keeping only males would be backwards. If everyone only kept the jacks, they fish might produce more males to make up for it. Which would in turn cause a decline in the walleye population.
If conservation is your goal, the smart way to go about selecting which fish to keep would be to keep the smaller keepers and let the bigger fish go, reguardless of weather it's male or female. After you take a picture and maybe some measurements, of coarse. If you're letting the bigger fish go and take the smaller ones, the bigger fish have a chance to spawn and pass on their dominant genes. Which creates a stronger fishery, and that has actually been proven. I'm pretty sure the idea of only keeping females has not. Remember, just because it has become a tradition doesn't mean it's a good idea.
Poaching is a huge contributing factor as well. Every year I see the same guys keeping snagged fish unhooking them under water the DNR can't seem to do anything about it. The run is getting worse every year. The numbers are on the decline. But now every idiot and there brother fish for these river eyes. The weather doesnt help the spawn much. The last 3 years the weather has been messed up during the run. I actually seen more walleye caught today farther upstream than I did at bluegrass. How far upstream I'm not saying. But I can say that Gary is gonna have a poor turnout for his tourney. Oh and another thing, the white bass numbers are way down to. Poaching has a huge effect on fish populations.
This is the 3rd year i have been a memeber of this blog, and i probably always will be. I have really never commented on anything on here but i like the information i get from it. This year it is rediculous how many stupid arguments are being waged. I think a few of you need to realize that its fishing..i love to fish i love to catch fish i love to eat fish. I guess if some of you people on here think you know everything about catching walleye during the run and keeping feemales or not then you are some well educated and well informed fish tracker biologist. In my opinion its very hard to believe that some of you have any clue what you are talking about. I am not sure how large Lake Erie is in sq. miles but i am certain that if some people keep certain fish that the lake is big enough that it is ok to do such. This site has been so informational to myself and many others, the past several years. It is called fishing for a reason. And i always here the same damn things about garys reports...."he just wants buisness, hes gonna lie about the river conditions just to get customers"...My question is, would it be better for you if his information wasnt available..Some of you on here just need to try to enjoy the fact that we get to do this every spring and stop being so god damn political about it, i pay taxes to hear politics. I have never heard anyone bitch when the limit was increased for shooting female deer. I hope some of you guys on here start trying to use this site for what it was started for. It has always been informatable to me, not a bitch and moan site, and think you know everything site, if i wanted all that i wouldnt fish, id stay home and get all that shit from the woman..Just judging, my guess is one or two of you is going to try and proove me wrong from what i just said...cuz thats all your good at doing..ITS FISHING..enjoy it for once
