Jacks or better; fish to win!

Jacks seem to be the fish of choice right now. I put a new pic above of my most recent catch. I have to eat some of my words fellas...the river will not be primed this weekend due to a huge push of water still making its way into the river. It rained way harder and longeer than forecasted. The river was rising fast last night. And we're still going up. Two weeks of this is certainly enough. Right now we're up to 7.83 on NOAA, up almost one foot from last night at this time. We're scheduled to rise to 8.4 but I don't see us going quite that high. The Perrysburg/Maumee HS Tournament is postponed one week. Welcome HoytBowHunter21 to the blog. And Devils17's comments on the last post are kindly taken. I'll only speak for myself on this: I can guide you to the river. I will be honest about conditions, depth, and general location of where fish are getting caught. I'm not willing to give away my hotspots though. It's taken me nearly 30 years to develop a system of where to go and when. However, anyone on this board who wants to tell people about their success locations is welcome to do so. I'm aware of the issue that people have when driving into town and wondering where to fish. So if you're headed in this weekend I would direct you first to Orleans lower lot. Second, the Orleans main lot, through the woods and then off to the left. Third: Schroeder Farms. Fourth: White Street access is going to fill up quick, so get there early. Fifth, the Fort Meigs lower lot and off to the right toward the bridge. Technique advice: learn how to read the river, looking for breaks and eddies. Study where you cast, meaning cast to the same spot for 10 casts. Then left, then right. Then longer, then shorter. See what works for you so that when you get a fish you know precisely where you got it from, and then cast in the same spot again. And for goodness sake, don't over float it. So many guys think that a long float gets fish, and that is not my experience when I float. Rather, cast slightly upriver, bring it around, and then in. Good luck fishing everyone.

Do you guys bleed out your fish after you catch them? I have heard that it makes them taste better.

Unknown said...

Don't know about taste, but I always bleed mine out. Not as big of a mess when you clean them.

Most of us will bleed them out when we have the time. A lot less messy as Heather said and I think it keeps the blood from pooling in the meat when they die and keep the fillets more white and taste better.

I Limited out at white st this morning, had 3 by 9 last one took an hour plus as I also snagged and threw back 4 walleye! ihave started to bleed them out. I just cut on bottom separating neck and the last gills. It is a lot less messy then when filleting and don't have to rub blood off meat.
