Hot Fish!

I really don't remember a March quite like this one. I mean there's always an early school that comes in. But we're usually about armpit deep and one foot from shore this time of year! Man, there are guys wading out WAY too far. Wow. But it happens when the river let's people. No use buggin.

The river is steady at 4.1 ft. Got some thunderstorms coming around tomorrow evening. I hope they friggin nail us.

First of all, Gatlin: so great to hear that you're clobbering them! And I also appreciate the good nature of your posts. The sewer I mentioned is across and upriver from the Ft. Meigs lower lot, on the Maumee Side. You may have walked right by them if you stayed on the path.

Live4Fishn: Please pardon some of the language and BS that was posted a while back. I think that we're all back to ALL GOOD if you guys know what I am saying. And to answer your question, this is not the peak. It's a really good March though! Save your vacation days until after we get some really heavy rain and where the river gets unfishable. It's bound to happen. If you hear me talking about a big, swelling river, then after that is when to get here again.

And Jimmie Jam: to answer your question, which I'll add is a valid one, about when to really tell if you got a bite going on. The key is, if you feel it pull back, you got a fish. If you don't feel anything in a few seconds, it's not a fish. I try to tap the bottom of the river with my weight. It's easy to go too heavy this time of year with the flow so slow and all. Don't leave out too much slack on the cast and always keep your line taut. You'll catch on dude. Tight line, a nice delicate bounce off the bottom, and when that fish hits and gives you a tug, set the hook brother.

This whole debate last week about catching a fish with the hook outside or in the mouth will be settled now. The shank has to be inside the mouth. Period. I have never played Russian Roulette with the DNR on that one.

So. DBLDIP, Graybeard, and Fisherboy: sounds like we're all off to a slow start if you think about it. With all these fish getting caught, we're either working or taking care of somebody. Or, forgetting all our crap when we go down there. Dang Fisherboy, you gotta drink more brew dude! It would make the walk out a lot more fun.

To those who have to post anonymously, try to figure out how to get signed up with a username/password. I have it set intentionally hard so that I avoid spam. I think you guys would agree that there is not a bunch of popup windows and crap going on here. Ask somebody for help if you just don't understand it. They will get it going for you and then it's easy.

Ya'll better be careful out there this year. Closer will get you. He's kickin some major walleye ass this year. Way to go your Royal Closeness!

Doc W.

Last couple of days has been Ok for me. I guess it depends if you have the time to stay down there & make 5000 casts. I might have my feel back again. At least I hope for. Still not making the early morning trips I used to.

& I agree people going out so far is a pain. I love to be close to shore. Saw 2 people get wet at BW walking back fr the rock ledge there4. One fell 3 X but he finally made it.

All the People bragging about all the fish .it is working to draw crowds I have never saw this many People and boats on the River,Perrysburg cops were busy ticketing people parking vehicles and trailers in no parking zones and blocking driveways,Maple St was a riot guys trying to put in and guys trying to get boats out ,Maumee Police were also busy with the same parking problems..
My limit apparently is 3 this year,Birdman is limiting,With out Dbldip here to harass me he sent someone on this site's Kid to harass me ,He has me rip the scales off the fish so they get mad and bite on his,,He is a good net man also.or Birdman would not get his limit..We saw 2 White Bass and a Lot of Suckers both fish and people,,and of coarse Birdman got a Buffalo not to big that is Dbldip's job.Hope things get settled down for Dbldip so he can fish,But Family is far more important than fishing and harrassing me

Thanks for the tip doc. Any thoughts on weights? I just always figured, the lower the water, the lighter the weight. I usually go with 5/8 oz. or lass.

Ol Dbldip went down last evening for a while , what a fricken zoo. Only had 1 fish on 2.5 hours which was by the tail. Same thing as everyone else, guys trying to get armpit deep and be further out than everone else and other dudes shortcasting. Its just not the same fishing by oneself when I should be harassing the shit out of Graybeard and Birdman. For the ampunt of people out there it looked like the boats were having the best luck. Tons of line out there already and with low water its only bound to get worse. The new Lucas county DNR was scoping the maumee side and the other are parking on the hill leading down to Ft Meigs. The only sure thing this year is Gary is making a killing with the early run and great weather. Maybe I should just get a job there since I can't seem to catch shit when I do go. Good luck to all(except Graybeard)

Did well with short leader. 18 to 24 inches . was in swift areas of button wood, not in middle. Lol. The Shorter the leader, better I did. 5/8 Ounce to 3/4. Medium floater Orange. Did not stick in the crowd though to many people for me. @ jimmie. I go as light as 3/8 in slower water. As long as I tap the bottom. Doc is right , go as light as possible.

From the mountain top of delight on Saturday to the depths of a hollow on Sunday. 1 sucker & 2 unknown on. The rock ledge was producing limits of course. & noone I knew was there to bug me. The ones I knew from the starting crew left when i got there. They must be telling me something. They had their limits however.
Another late start for me. Worst thing was not catching any fish (noone below me for 50 yards caught anything)but losing a pile of jigs & weights which I put by my coat. You guys know how I hate to buy any.

Went to the river on Saturday, I got my limit by 10am. I was using a 4ft leader with 1/2 oz weight. Orange head orange tail. My one buddy got his limit finally at 1pm. The fishing slowed way down after 11am. I landed 7 eyes altogether. All fish were between 20-22 inch Jacks. Tasty,Tasty,Tasty. Im looking to come up again next weekend if the water comes up. I hope there will be another big push of eyes soon. That water is getting very warm. Come on rain...

wow fishing really sucked today....only got 2 after limiting multiple times last week. Seemed like there were hardly any fish in the river. Very few were catching anything. Any idea why they would shut off when its this nice out doc

Yeah, I have a few ideas. Even when the water is stable and fluctuating a half of foot either way, the river is so low that the next batch isn't making it's way upriver. The fish have moved from Orleans up through the towpath area. If I were you I'd try upriver. Buttonwood will be your best shot on the Perrysburg side. on the Maumee side, head upriver past the rapids by the 475 bridge.

so what do you think will happen if the water doesnt go up this season?

fisherboy said...

BW sucked today too. 1 guy did get 3, 1 had 2, 1 had 1 & 1 of the better armpit fisherman had 1 (really was a legal 1). 2 others good fishermen had none. Plus 10 others reasonablely decent fishermen had zero.

I believe the fish have gone further upstream to Grand Rapids & Ft Wayne. Seriously Jerome road area might be the best bet.

what would make them go that far up river?

fisherboy said...

Just joking about Ft Wayne & Grand Rapids. (A few might decide to try GR but only a few)

I just got home from being at the river foe 3 days. I can tell you there were alot of nice jacks being caught IF you were in just the right hole. I saw 12 limits caught today 50 yards from me. It took me and my buddy from daylight to darkto get ours. (they were all in the hole I fished wednesday) But we fished our bigger size fish spot,it was alot of work but buddy had a 20lb stringer & I had a 17lb stringer. We also released a couple females. I have fished hard for 4 days & the same color has not worked for me 2 days in a row. Today it was pink & white. Good luck all!

is the run over already?

Have any of you launched at Corey Street before and gone up river? I've got a 16' deep v and I don't know the channels that way and wonder how tough it would be in stained water. Never have been through there. Have a depth finder but I doubt it would be much help.

Graybeard said...

can't be over Birdman and I each got one today and we saw 3 or 4 others caught ,of course I have done that good fishing for catfish in the summer

fisherboy said...

5 hours? That would be my speed!

Anonymous said...

was the fishing any better today for anyone?

fisherboy said...

Really great for me. Didn't go.

Anonymous said...

might as well pack it in...this run is over....possibly the worst run the maumee has ever had.

yeah the river is way to warm at this point. More than likely the fish are just going to spawn in the bays and rockpiles where its ideal spawning temp. Everyone was all excited about the warm weather early and it screwed the year
