Snow and potential thaw

We are expecting 3-5" of new snow by Tuesday, February 18. Then the air temps are expected to increase and cause a major thaw toward the week's end. I will keep you updated on the condition of the river at the end of the week. If you have never seen the river ice break and flow, it is a sight to see. If you can help out by posting the cce movement upriver from Perrysburg, it would help inform all of us. Thanks!

Dr Walleye,
Can you tell me how much time is remaining for ICE Fishing season.

Last year I was fishing to the 1st week in March. Year before a little later than that. This year who knows.

BTW if you want a local spot to fish try Orlander Park on Sylvania. The fish may not be the largest but they are plentiful. Mostly wax worms & spikes.
I may wander there tomorrow mainly because its going to be warm which means i don't have to drag my shanty. I almost passed out doing it Sunday. Too much snow to plow thru.

Hemant: I am not able to fish this weekend. Also, I don't know exactly what this rain will do to the ice. But I plan to check ice next week. Thanks for the offer. Be sure to go to Schroeder Farms during walleye season on the river. It's a campsite and launch run by good people.

How much longer do you think It'll be before the walleye start to move?

Austin, I usually hit the river the first week of March, but this year is suspect. It really depends on the bay ice breaking apart so that the river can empty and let the lake water warm up. I would be happy with a walleye before March 15.

I'm hoping it starts soon. I'm stoked for it this year. Got all my gear together, and now I'm ready to roll. Haha

Just finished ice fishing around west sister and it was great! It's my first time fishin the Maumee and I took off the first week of april I know it depends on the year but is that usually a good time to go? Thanks.

Dr. Walleye said...

Jalex, oh yes, early April should have strong walleye fishing. Best of luck. Let us know how you do this year!

Thanks for the info and I'll definitely let you know. Like Austin Harmon, I'm so excited to go. Love river fishing and I heard fishing the Maumee's one of the best!

The river broke open last 2 days at Perrysburg. Curently open on North side of Audobon island and jammed up from Orleans to Maple St on Perrysburg side. Water is in parking lot as you pull into Orleans so driving down there or down to Ft Meigs lower lot is not advised since that is flooded also.

The river remains hi in and around Perrysburg. Was still jammed on Perrysburg side between Orleans and Maple street as of last evening. Surpisingly still locked in ice above Grand Rapids Dam.

Open ice today as far as I could see upriver from 475. Buttonwood/Schroeders is open but there's a big jam on the sidecut side between Bluegrass Island and Maumee.

Michigan Fishing License 2014

What fishing licenses will be available in March 2014?
There will be five fishing licenses, plus two hunt/fish combo licenses available in March 2014:

•Fish 24-hour - $10 (good for residents and non-residents for all species)
•Fish 72-hour - $30 (good for residents and non-residents for all species)
•Fish all-species nonresident annual - $76
•Fish all-species resident annual - $26
•Fish all-species senior annual - $11 (good for residents only)
•Hunt/fish combo nonresident - $266
•Hunt/fish combo resident - $76

Why is the cost of the non-resident fishing license increasing so much?
Previously the cost of a non-resident fishing license in Michigan was $42. This was lower than every other Great Lakes state, except for Ohio. An increase in the cost of the non-resident fishing license would reflect the popularity and value of Michigan's fisheries and allow the DNR to create additional world-class opportunities.

Very interesting article, Graybeard. It looks like my out of state fishing expenses just went up. But it's sort of like beer prices at concerts. When I walk up and pay $11 for a big ole brew, I always smile and chuckle thinking, "I would have paid $13..."
