ICE ICE BABY

Walleye Warriors, I don't know how to tell you this, but the river is SCREWED. You saw the pics I just put up. We were upriver from the Maumee Bridge on the Perrysburg side today. The Closer and I walked down the fort and over to the main river. Fellas, we stood on ice chunks piled on ice chunks. Off the main river, we stood at least 10 ft in the air on piles and piles of ice that were right along the banks. We watched as the very narrow strands of moving water were blasted by huge ice chunks, and they didn't even make a dent. There is SO MUCH ICE still in the river that it seriously will take WEEKS to open up. How unfortunate. * * * We got in our waders and walked around on nothing but ice. We never ventured over water, which tells you the gravity of just how much ice is on the banks, let alone in the river. It's terrible. I took a 6 ft. ice spud with us, and we clobbered along just looking at all the carnage. We mostly walked on ice (upon more ice) that was 2 ft thick. And there were several slabs underneath us. Sometimes, I would find a fissure and punch threw, but I never reached the ground. There is so much ice. * * * I predict that no one can fish at least for another two weeks if not more. The ice is so thick that warm temps will barely dent it. We need a flood. We need a lot of warm rain to even get the river moving, let alone all the ice along the edge. Across the river today (looking at Sidecut and also we looked from Buttonwood to Bluegrass) guys can't even get to the river due to the gigantic piles of ice along the banks. That's why we went today, to get a true picture of what is going on. Gentlemen, I know we are all working on a solid lesson from The Lord in patience, but my stars! You better plan to keep learning that lesson a lot longer. We are scheduled for 45 degrees for a few days and then 4-8" of snow on Wednesday. The way I saw it today, the river will not be improving anytime soon. Sorry fellas. Save your vacation days. I'm more anxious than most to get to the river. Hell, I walked it today. But don't even think about coming to fish yet. I WILL keep you posted. Sincerely, Dr. Walleye.

Didn't fish last year until the last week in March (or thereabout) due to illness. May not this year due to ice. It really is amazing about the quantity.

1959 at Ft Meigs we had Ice into May 1978 was also a big Ice Year. The Lake Still Has 24 inches in many places. The Marina's also still have 2 foot of ice .years back we use to push and pull a 14 ft boat across the Ice to get to open water.a few times when we could get the big boats in .We would get out in the lake and the wind would shift and ice would block the Marina entrance

It was truely a site to see. Real warm today, but not real sure it put a dent in the ice. Planning on looking at it again this weekend.

Great update on the ice! You are brave to go wading out there! I've been looking at the ice on the river over the past few weeks with a little quadcopter, here's a video of the ice near Conant I took at the end of last week. I don't recall ever seeing it look like this in March! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDMR-Mx_2AI&feature=share

Graybeard in 59 I did not know what a WE was (or the Maumee either). I do remember 78 however catching a couple of fish the last couple days in March with chunks of ice at the sewer plant (Orleans).
& I wish you would give me some energy to doing somw walking

Shawn, I have seen your work from up at Grand Rapids. Nicely done sir! I like your lower lot shots. Thank you for posting it. And to all the eager anglers out there, the river is headed upward. We expect another inch of rain overnight before the snow hits. I'll do my best to get some updated pictures put on here later this week. Hang tight. We have more waiting to do...

Also, the pictures I posted are so deceiving. The ice is piled so incredibly high. We will be walking around it for many weeks after we can even get in the river. Keep your eyes upstream all spring!

Went by river after the level 3 was removed. Around 5:00. All I saw was open water from Sidecut to Jerome. High & fast. Don't know where or when all the ice between Bluegrass & the Maumee side went. Ice was jamed yet at Perry Mount Park (no idea of park name)in Perryburg. Open water downstream (300, 400, whatever distance)

I went back down to the river early this morning from the little park in Maumee directly across the river from Orleans Park and shot another video. The river looks drastically different than it did last week! I hope its helpful...There's hope!
