Starting to Clear Out

The Maumee River today is at 8 ft on NOAA and is on the drop. That's still way too high to fish, but the good news is that the recent spike in depth helped break out a lot of ice. As seen in the new top picture, the lower lot is flooded and iced over, but the river in the background is now open. There is still a lot of ice yet to travel down from upriver, but things are much improved in one week. With a forecast of quiet weather this coming week, I anticipate seeing a few people trying to get out and fish by the week's end. Keep your eyes upriver! The ice flow is not over.

AA THE RIVER LEVEL THIS MORNING IS AT 588' ABOVE SEA LEVEL. UP TWO FOOT SINCE YESTERDAYS READING. ALSO THERE IS A LOT OF ICE IN THE CURRENT. ICE IS BEING PULLED FROM THE BANK FROM THE HIGH WATER. THAT WILL MAKE ACCESS TO THE RIVER BETTER ONCE THE RIVER DOES DROP. THIS WEATHER TOTALLY SUCKS. LOOKING BACK AT FISH PICTURES WE TOOK LAST YEAR, THE FIRST PHOTO'S WERE TAKEN ON 3/08 AND 2012 FIRST PHOTO WAS ON 2/18. AS I MENTIONED IN PREVIOUS REPORTS, THE FISH WILL BE THERE WHEN THE WATER LEVEL DROPS. ORLEANS PARK OR THE WHITE ST. ACCESS NO DOUBT WILL BE THE FIRST AREA'S TO PRODUCE SOME FISH. LOOKS LIKE WE WILL BE LOSING THE COLD WEATHER ON TUESDAY. AND A STEADY WARMING TREND THERE AFTER. WHEN DO I THINK THE ACTION WILL START? NEXT THURSDAY - SUNDAY. NOT MUCH PRECIPITATION BETWEEN NOW AND THE NEXT EIGHT DAYS. I WILL TAKE THE WATER TEMP. AS SOON AS IT'S SAFE TO DO SO.

Do you guys think the river will be fishable later this week? Do you also think there will be new walleye in the river later this week? Thanks for your thoughts

Dbldip said...

Chief Wahoo it may become fishable at high water spots but until all ice upstream goes through it would be unsafe and a waste of time. If the thaw continues it will be at least a week before it drops a lot.

The river is way up this morning and jammed just east of hood park in Perrysburg. Maple street parking is completely flooded as well as main lot going to Orleans. Heard the ice above Grand Rapids Dam finally blew out. Audobon island is almost completely flooded. Some of the highest water I have seen in many years.

The parking lot at White st had water in it this morning as did the Parking lot at Fort Meigs.and the upper lot to the Jet Ski ramp

From the Bait Shop..I wonder if he will drive down there .the lot is flooded and full of ice. I doubt Perrysburg has any plans to break up the Ice or pump the water out
I'M HOPING THE RIVER LEVEL WILL DROP ENOUGH SO SOME OF YOU ANGLERS CAN AT LEAST GET IN AT ORLEANS PARK THIS COMING WEEKEND. AS OF YESTERDAY THE BARRICADES ARE STILL UP AT THE ENTRANCE OF ORLEANS PARK. I PLAN TO FIND OUT TODAY WHEN THEY PLAN TO OPEN UP THE PARK

Thanks Graybeard. I guess it's time to put my ice fishing gear away after this weekend, if not sooner.

Is it worth the 2 hour drive to come out on sunday.. Maybe try orleans

kingslayer said...

devin no. chances are slim to none that you will catch one. There may be a few fish in the river but the temp is really low and water is still pretty high. if your driving that far it would be best to wait until you have a good chance of catching them.
