Getting within range

The river is hanging at 7.5 ft on NOAA which puts most spots out of reach. But high water areas like Orleans, lower lot, and White Street will have company this weekend. Bluegrass is not accessible this weekend. The water is still cold--under 40 degrees. And there are still ice chunks going by every few minutes, which will take boaters out of action this weekend. Hang tough fellas. We are getting there. But a long roadtrip this weekend would have you leaving here disappointed. I got one carp and saw no walleye when I was out fishing. Compared to one week ago, the river has improved tremendously. But it's high and chunky. And FAST!

Graybeard Was up in Dundee exchanging waders. I know they were leaking a little from last year. Fished for about a hour at Orleans from shore witout boots on. Colder than hell. I wished I had not put my ice fishing equipment away. For 2 cents I would get it out again if I had someone to fish with.
(Believe I saw that WE from Orleans. A guy was leaving with 1 when I got there around 4 or so. Looked like a female to me. & I saw a buddy of mine when I was leaving. He did not even come over to say hi to me.)

Do you guys think because if the weather we will have a good run if walleye all the way into May? Or will it be a more concentrated run for fewer weeks?

Chief Wahoo, this year who the hell knows. All bets are off!

Chief Wahoo said...

I was afraid of that- I wonder how past years like this one affected the run.

DBLDIP and I have been talking about that, Chief Wahoo. It really depends on the river conditions. If we can level out and keep a nice full river of water, we could be setting up for a great May. But if the river drops low and then floods back out, the fish could come and go quickly.

Thanks for that feed back!

some of us remember back in the 70's and 80's When the limit was 10 and you could fish day and night.some of the runs would only last 2 or 3 weeks.and you would think it was a bad run if you did not get your limit in a hour or two..and the under cover game wardens use to fish right next to us trying to catch people snagging. they would snag a fish put it on a rope stringer with no look in the end.those were the days...when night fishing they would sneak up on us a lot ..Times sure changed .there was not as many fishermen as there is now.

Did a drive by this morning and the river was pretty much deserted. 1 guy and 1 game warden at Orleans. With tonights expected low of 9 degrees don't expect much action in next couple of days. Water is dropping fast now and all of the new trees left in river from ice are going to make navigation tricky when the flow increases.
