Time to re-spool

Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you to the LADIES who have followed me on Instagram and on my blog. The women's voice on fishing is integral to the sport. And I for one, speaking for many of the genlemen on this site, love that you're fishing with us too. Together, we are the Walleye Warriors! * * * So let's talk walleye. On NOAA, the Mighty Maumee is at 5.5 with a strong west wind. The river will continue to drop tomorrow as the day goes on. But some rain is coming to slow the drop. With the river dropping nicely, we will soon get to view the damage and carnage of the winter ice. BEWARE! There are holes where there were not last year. There will be piles of rocks, especially as seen at Buttonwood, where there were holes. Be especially aware of long gone tree roots, unseen in the depth, where the largest of holes emerge. And heed DBLDIP's warning on the former post. * * * I am excited to get back into the flow of the hatch. We're so preseason here it's silly. I for one will be interested in how things are going by next weekend as well. Stay tuned on that one. And if you're like me, I had my line re-spooled weeks ago... * * * I'm Dr. Walleye, and I'm ready to smack me a couple of fish!

Anyone suspect this weekend will be any good? Is it going to be worth it to come out or should we wait ANOTHER week?

I was thinking about driving up from Fort Wayne to give it a go next Monday and was wondering the same thing as Pin Wheel.

Pin Wheel, an hour's drive will be worth you getting down here and streching the legs, my brotha or sista. Yes, there is always a chance of a walleye. I know of 3 caught on the river as today, Tuesday. I'm going down sometime soon and expect to walk away with one legal walleye!

SlimJim, I believe that next Monday will be better than this Friday, if that helps any. Come on down dude!

For a first timer, can you give me a few more details please? Since I don't have a boat, I'm hoping this area is good for waders ? Where is a good spot to walk out/park (cross roads please). Also, is a good bait a swedish pimple with a minnow on it, or something else? Thank you for the great information and pictures so far!

any limits yet? To answer your questions Thomas Maumee tackle is were I got a lot of my information to get hooked on this Maumee walleye river run. A trolling sinker leader line and a floating jig head with a twister tail is the best rig that works for me. The tackle shop has everything you need.

Thomas, read all the regs. I dont believe live bait is allowed in Mar-April. Lot of public access. Check walleyerun.com for a map of them. Lot of options. floaters, lead, etc. ( I know doc is a lead man :) ) just gotta figure out what u like! I got a feeling things will pick up drastically in the next 7 days.

FYI Doc, this is Gatlin from the last couple years.. Just a new google account.

Dr. Walleye said...

Ah Gatlin! Welcome back as Cory. Thank you for the clarification. * * * The river is fishable. I was surprised at the low numbers tonight. Unless you're talking about DNR. Gee whizz. Where aren't they? Bored I guess. But I do like the new blacked out vehicles with all the antennas.

Unknown said...

Are there any limits seen yet. I have a two hour drive ahead of me tomorrow just need to know.

Unknown said...

No limits that I've heard about. I've only heard of about 5 fish caught so far, all together. Sunday may be worth an honest try though. I'm still debating. Next week should get better each day I think.

Unknown said...

Thanks for the tips! Roughly, what time of day is the fishing the best? Both this site and the Walleyerun site are awesome. Thank you. Good luck and stay safe out there.

Is anyone else addicted to this site, Maumee Tackle and walleyerun.com site? My brother and I are coming up Wednesday and fishing till Saturday. Good run or not this is the time I scheduled off for work. Hopefully it will be a good one...if not I'll get in some good times with mY brother fishing the river and bullshitting. First time fishing the Maumee, we're going to give it hell!

Had some parkers with some fish today. Biggest stringer was 3. I am going to give it a try tomorrow!!

Dr. Walleye said...

Thanks Heather. I'm going to have to rely on everyone's comments this weekend and early next week to hear about the fishing since I can't get down there. Thanks everyone for visiting my site!

So Shroeders is open now? Where is fisherboy and graybeard? No hot updates from them ol' coots!

Graybeard said...

I damn sure am not in New Jersey a year & a Half was enough for me..too cold for me only seen a few fish even the lead slingers are having problems..as many wardens as fishermen .you can walk to the Island from Orleans.

kingslayer said...

anything change with the walk out to meigs point there? i was worried that with the extreme ice/flooding that it may have got deeper and harder to cross. Seemed a little deeper than years past last year but that could also have just been me pushing the limits. Got wet once hahaha

fisherboy said...

Dpldip I have fished only once this yr for a hour. Took wife to Urgent Care Monday & to Emercey Wed. She is reasonably Ok with a nerve problem in one of her legs. Then I got sick as a dog Friday & Saturday. Had my son drive me down today to look at the river. Yes they were walking to the island at Orleans. That kills that spot for me as I will be damn I'm walking out 200 yards to fish. I hope to fish tomorrow at Doc's hole. Or maybe down by Ft Meigs if I feel up to the walk.
I did see some fish on stringers but only singles. So you have not missed anything.

fisherboy said...

BTW Doc'd hole refers to Buttonwods.

Unknown said...

Yes Dbldip Schroeders is open :) Didn't talk to anyone with a limit today, but many with one, two and three. Did see a few pictures posted on various Facebook pages of fish and a few limits. Don't know how long it took to get them though. I didn't get a chance to go myself. Hoping to tomorrow evening for a bit.

Went out today for a while with my awesome fiancé and got nothing but snags. Did see some singles and a some people go for a swim trying to walk from Orleans to the island. That made it really hard to fish from a boat there today

Need some help. Coming in Wednesday from Fort Wayne, IN. I was there last year with a buddy of mine and we fish from a boat. Going to be solo this trip and wading. Could someone please direct me to a spot they think I might have some success. Thank you so much!

Unknown said...

Caught two at Orleans, was only there for about an hour And a half.

fisherboy said...

Actually fished tonight. Went to White Sr for about 30 minutes until I convinced the guy driving that the water was too slow there.
BW was non-producing but I did land a sucker & lost another fish which I believe was a sucker. Water level seem perfect. 1 guy had a WE

Dr. Walleye said...

Thanks for the updates everyone. I will start. New post in a few days. From the sounds of it Orleans is not all the way dried up but with the drop...might want to goto BWood and Bluegrass.

With this wind today the level at Orleans will be down to nothing. Any action should be bluegrass and upriver if you can even control ur line. Might try tomorrow evening. Doc are you back by then? Graybeard showed up the Birdman with 1 walleye yesterday. Great job Graybeard! Waiting for Opiewan to update after his trip this afternoon with ShakySteve.

Unknown said...

Dangerous place to be today in a boat. Wind was so bad if I didn't get help from another fisherman today I would have never got the boat loaded. Thanks whoever your are. Only pinned 1 lost 2, seen 4 others caught! Wind made feeling the bounce almost impossible!

fisherboy said...

1 sucker, 2 foul-hoked WE & 2 legal beavers at BW. Lost another legal at net. The wind was really blowing.
So I guess Ft Meigs has some fish.

opiewan said...

well dbldip me and shakey went to blue grass across from BW. saw a couple fish caught. Shakey fouled what looked like a either a really big jack or maybe a female not sure. five miutes after that he dropped his spool off his reel and his fishing day was over. probably to much vibration. Any way super slow. I would guess will be real good in about another week or so.

Thats some funny stuff there Opiewan, welcome to the Blog!
