On the drop...

I went to my favorite spot and was on the clock the whole time. Ended up taking only one home. Lost two in my hands. The river seemed vacant. Saw a few boats going by. We got in white bass, white perch, carp, quillbacks. The action was medium fast with plenty of slow spots. I was surprised we didn't get more walleye in. Might be time to move upriver.

I talked with a guy who got busted last year. He said he was at Schroeders, had got done fishing, and had 2 walleye on his stringer. A normal dressed guy came up and started talking to him. They chatted for a half hour, and then the guy turned and left--drove off in a truck with Michigan plates. He left his stringer there 'on accident'. So after another hour, the original guy picked it up (4 fish) and put it in his truck. On the way out, the DNR stopped and busted him for 2 fish over the limit! Talk about a set up! The guy pleaded that isn't it better to take the fish and eat them, knowing they were left behind? DNR didn't see it that way of course. Fools. DNR are still around town. Earlier this week on the Perrysburg side at least 6 DNR, park ranger, and township police were involved in a sting that busted I believe 4 guys for snagging.

Fished at Meigs today with hunchy aka Grey Beard. Caught several quillback and a few sucker. Only had one female walleye and threw it back. Found a snagging hook on a snag pullback. It was about a 1.5 oz lead forward, cast with a huge hook the was turned 90* from the eyelet. Later in the morning a guy came by using the exact same hook. He was using a catfish pole and around 30 lb line. Could he be a snagger?

Better watch out Graybeard, sounds like you have an impersonator out there trying to tarnish your good name. Maybe he knows how to actually catch fish!! Will try to hit it Monday if water cooperates.

May be it was LONGDONG from HONG KONG.or Rip MeOff or his brother Jack MeOff

I know who you are talking about, and yes he does look and act a lot like Graybeard but they are 2 different guys.

Interesting posts. Watched 3 guys fr Columbus area land around 12 WE. They were all males. Their gear was on the heavy size but def not a snaging hook. Quite a few of them were legal (maybe all for all I know). At the same time I got 1 sheephead & 1 WB, both snaged. After they left I only had 30 minutes before I had to leave. Moved to the area they were in & got another WB & 1 jack WE.

the guys i was fishing around today were definitely snaggers. Were using about 30 pound line. 6/0 leadhead that was turned sideways 1 1/2-3 oz lead and a 2in grub. you dont get much more obvious then that

Is a fish really worth all this dudes effort to snag, let alone the risk of getting caught. If two guys saw it then there was a good chance the DNR did as well. Some people act as if a walleye is a piece of gold and will do anything to catch one. A true fisherman is fishing for the fun and enjoyment and a tasty meal.

Thank you DR. Walleye and everyone else on here. I truely enjoy all the imformation you guys have shared. Yes i am an out of towner, but my wife, my dog buck, and myself really enjoyed the fishing and just exploring your area of Ohio. You ever want to come to Michigan and fish or hunt your more than welcome to come to our place and enjoy some great walleye, bluegill, bass, and steelhead fishing on the st. joe river or one of the many lakes in our area. Thank you again from the Jeffries family, see you next year or on lake erie.

Better today for me. 2 WE & 2 WB & 1 WP. Fishing died when the east wind started. Lost more jigs & weights than I care to talk about. Was at Ft. Meigs.

Of course a few junk fish too.

As if I don't eat enough fish at home. Going out to saefood rest & will order grouper. Don't catch many of those around here.

hey i have heard that catfishing on the river can be really good. Can anyone tell me how where and what to use to catch them

Yes catfishing can be very good on the river. As the water drops any area from the Maumee/Pburg bridge upriver can be good for cats. Lots fo guys wade the Farnsworth park area up to the dam at Grand rapids hitting the holes. Use either live bait(minnows, nightcrawlers or my favorite crayfish) drifting slowly under a bobber. They also use bluegills as bait for flatheads some up to 30 lbs which are caught in the same areas. I like when the water is extra low which tends to concentrate the fish better. Just below the dam at Grand Rapids is a popular spot and you never know what you may catch there. Throwing crankbaits or any small spinners works well also, but I like the low tech approach. Its a lot of fun just taking it easy drinking a couple of cold ones and watching ol Doc W kiss the first cat of the night. Some guys keep and eat the fish which is ok but we normally just throw them back waiting for the next big one.June through August can be good.

Can you catch them at buttonwood? Someone told me that was a good spot

If you fish live bait up at the dam in GR, you will have a blast. Just look for holes and use live bait. And if that isn't working for you, throw your minnows on a jig towards the dam... You should catch a few longnose gar which are fun to fight in. Also, there is a resident walleye population up there so you may get lucky with one of those too.

Believe I have finished WE fishing for a while (maybe for yr). Went to 2 1/8 oz lead jigs. Only 13 WB but fun nevertheless. Did see 1 WE snaged in the tail. Couple of guys fishing 4 hours had stringers of WB that I would hate to carry or drag. Some guys had few or none. Above was at BW.

Buttonwood can be very good for catfishing. Last year was an off year, we only did real good there a couple of days. The terrain there has changed a lot over the last couple of years, a good example is the big rock pile right at the end of the road. That was not there 2 years ago.

Walleye1: Thanks a whole bunch for your compliments. I have a brother in southern Michigan and we get out at inland lakes for bass and gills. I appreciate your offer very much and am glad that you found my blog useful.
