The Closer and I tried Monday night upriver at our honey hole, just down from the dragstrip and got skunked on walleye. We tossed everything out there. I only got one white bass and a carp. Closer did much better with a bigger variety of species too.
We're not done yet though. I gotta hook up with DBLDIP and have him show me his late season hotspots. I got 39 walleye home this year from the river so far and would love to hit 40. I'm retiring my old reel and tried to talk it into a nice retirement (on my wall by my mount on the broken lightning rod that I snapped the tip off this year-bummer). But it just wouldn't cooperate 2 nights ago by giving me one more walleye...
I'll post some more this month, especially when the white bass really start hitting. That's a fun time. And DBLDIP is right--the catfishing in the summertime is post worthy. Remember to save my link for next year. I'll be back.
One thing I'm wondering from everyone is whether my blog was useful in determining when you guys would drive to town (or not) based on my fishing reports. I intended to help guys figure out when to make the trek here. Time is valuable. We all are busy and many of us are not yet retired. So post about the usefulness of my blog and how I could make it better for 2012. This year we are approaching 10,000 hits on my blog. That rocks!
I've considered starting a website rather than a blog since they are more interactive. Even a wiki would allow people to post their own pics/movies and that sort of thing. I hesitate to twitter basically because when I'm fishing I don't like being on the phone.
We sometimes refer to the Maumee as "Mother River" since she really gives birth to tons of walleye each year. Plus she provides a feeling of being reborn to all of us who enter her depths. It's a nice getaway, even for us who live here...it's like being miles away from the busy side of life. All said and done I hope visitors here remember the whole reason we fish. The Jeffries family understands what I'm saying. And it's gratifying to use this site to spread the positive word about walleye fishing, even among people we don't know. Live to Fish. Fish to Live.

The blog was very helpful. I know that every time I went out my friends and I checked your blog to see if it was worth it or not. Your site also helped us figure out what to do as this was our first year really 'hitting' the walleye run. Keep the blog going, especially in the fall when WB make their second run. In the meantime, its back East for the summer and some saltwater fishing for me.
the wb make a second run?
<>
Very much so. I read your blog EVERY DAY during the run. It's terrific.
<< I intended to help guys figure out when to make the trek here.>>
I appreciate it very much; it takes me about 90 minutes to get to your town. When the river is unfishable, that makes a long, lousy drive back.
We really appreciated being able to check a reliable source! Keep it up and we'll be back fishing next spring. Thanks!
Your site is very valuable to me.It is informational and intertaining with all the razzing of the local guys and the PROTECTORS. I have one question. What made the 2003 year so great and how did this year compare?
There is no 2nd run of WB but. During the summer (June - Oct)there are WB in the upper river to the Grand Rapids & the Provindence Dams. Usualy the quanity is less than 12 but I have caught upwards to 45.
Saw a few WE today but only 1 per person. I have been WB fishing with some camper friends & having decent luck. Not great but if it was fishing for anything besides WB it would be geat. I wondered why 1 of them left the river quickly without a word. Saw why when I looked in his cooler. A large female WE (hard as a rock) was inside. For some unknown reason he wanted to make himself less visible.
Along those lines another big bust at BW this evening. The park rangers, Perrysburg City & Perrysburg Twp police arrested 3 guys. Their offense-drinking in kayaks from what I heard & saw.
Your postings are great and I just wish that I have read them earlier! They are doubling the fun of fishing.
Even now I am out of town and extremely busy, I can not help not to read your posts and get to know what is going on at home.
Thanks a lot!
The whiteys are hear, talked to several guys and they are hammering them just below Buttonwood. If you want to have some fun with your ultralight nows the time. If the river stays at this level the next 2 weeks should be excellent.
For unknown reasons several comments were deleted and I couldn't access blogspot for a few days. Rest assured, I read that people use this site to determine when to fish and also read the crazy stuff that happens on the river, including but not limited to the antics of the DNR. So, maybe those other posts will get restored sometime.
Add this one to your DNR antics, I guess they made a "Big Bust" the other day because someone at Buttonwood kept 1 snagged white bass, took 2 DNR for this massive amount of investigative work. I guess we can see where the state could cut some payroll waste. Maybe Kasich should be looking to that department to save some $$.
Wow lol....is it illegal for me to keep a snagged carp as well?
Tear- in -up no its not illegal to keep a carp, they are considered a forage/rough fish. A white bass is labeled as a gamefish and can not legally be kept by snagging. The beforementioned ticket happy writing DNR should use a little common sense and give a warning to the unkowing person but another notch on their belt makes them feel empowered. $123 for a white bass is just plain stupid. But they have to try to substantiate their overblown numbers on the state payroll. Too bad Gov. Kasich doesn't cut some fat in that department instead of hammerin the working people of the state.
yeah i didnt think it mattered if you snagged a fish that there is no limit
I got a surprise when catfish at least 20" slammed my crankbait off Bluegrass Island about 7:30 Sat evening. Thunderstorm that just passed through must have made 'em crazy. Too bad it didn't do the same for the WB. Only took a couple.
3 days of not fishing the mighty Maumee. Going into withdrawal pains. But I did managed to fish 1 hour for gills with minute luck for them.
See the river is really mighty again.
hey just wondering what the best spots and way to catch channel catfish in the maumee? as much advice as possible would be helpful
The river is back up to 585.5 feet. Too high for much of anything but Orleans. Looks like no real good fishing until the wwekend with the predicted rainfall. Hey Fisherboy I bet U are going stir crazy with this crappy weather.Graybeard what are you seeing on your walkaabouts?

TOLEDO -- Wildlife researchers want to know what's killing thousands of walleye in Lake Erie that have been washing up on beaches along its western shore.
It's a big concern for anglers who come from across the Midwest and beyond to catch the lake's most popular sport fish.
The best guess is that the die-off can be blamed on natural causes stemming from the stress of spawning and the cold, stormy spring, said Roger Knight, Lake Erie fisheries program manager for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
"It all kind of fits that picture," he said.
The worst is likely over, said Knight, who flew over the lake earlier this week and didn't see a huge number of dead fish. "It probably started a while ago," he said.
It's difficult to know how many walleye have died, but Knight estimated it was in the thousands based on phone calls coming to his office. Most have been around the Lake Erie islands and between Toledo and Port Clinton.
Whatever is killing them isn't a danger to people who catch and eat walleye out of the lake, Knight added.
The walleye may be one of the most important resources for towns along Lake Erie's western shore.
Fishing brings in close to $500 million in spending on equipment, food, fuel and hotels, according to the American Sportfishing Association. This weekend, about 250 professionals and amateurs are participating in a tournament in Port Clinton.
Towns celebrate the tasty fish in a variety of ways. In Port Clinton, they lower a fiberglass walleye from a crane every New Year's Eve, and Toledo's minor league hockey team is called the Walleye.
That's why any sign of trouble for the walleye is taken seriously along Lake Erie.
"When you see six or eight fish in a certain area, that's not right," Pete Harsh, a pro angler from Minnesota, told The News-Herald of Port Clinton.
Charter captain Dave O'Neal told the newspaper his customers were concerned.
Knight doubts the die-off will have any lingering effect on the lake's walleye population.
There are about 20 million walleye in Lake Erie, and up to 30 percent can die in a year, he said.
Most of the dead walleye have a lot of fungus, another sign that is typical after spawning, Knight said. Walleye expend a lot of energy during spawning, and that leaves them vulnerable to disease and death, he said.
Researchers also are testing the fish for viruses to determine if that could be the cause, he said.
I think there Walleye Deaths answer is Bullshit I have a friend that has lived on the Lake for 37 years, and I have fished it for well over 50 years ,none of us have ever seen this many Walleye wash up on the beaches,,a couple years ago Sheepshead were washing up on the beach..why don't they tell us what is really going on..
Another Thing I am pissed about ..I went overseas for over 6 years to fight for this country,,when I came back ,someone changed the name of Lake Erie Pickerel to Walleye,,I did not even know what a Walleye was I thought we went to Canada to catch them,,I don't care if it is their real fancy name to my old ass they are still Lake Erie Pickerel...I should have stayed here in the country and fought for the Pickerel
who the hell cares about lake erie pickeral. There name has been walleye forever and only a dumbass would call them a pickeral
only a dumb ass would not know they were call Lake Erie pickerel ,maybe we should meet some where and talk about it
The Fish
World Class fishing for Pickerel (Walleye) and Rainbow Trout (Steelhead). Great action from the cool waters of Central Lake Erie. Fun to catch and delicious eating
I would recommend meeting at Dales Friday night .close to police and hospital
wow who fights over a fishs name. Who cares what its called. Its like calling a bluegill a brim or a smallmouth a black bass. Who cares. it isnt any reason to make a deal about it or try starting a fight. Of course their comments are anonymous
Fished at BW (Beach Hole)for 45 minutes or so. Got 3 carp (?) scales on 2 occasions, had another strike (bump)& had a snaged WE on. Or so I thought. Turned out to be a good size snaged sheephead.
Went out to Evergreen Lake to check on gills. Used my trusty floating ant. Managed to get 11 (8 keepers 7 to 8"). But what surprised me was the fact I also caught 8 crappies. Not particularly large. Most were between 8 & 8 1/2". Also lost at least 5 other crappies. Kind of wish I had minnows.
