Crested for now

The river crested overnight at 8.85 and will be slowly trickling down today/tonight. It's expected to rise a little bit on Saturday/Sunday. Good luck getting to your favorite spot. The river is rolling fast. I have not heard of anyone going really good but hope for better news by late in the weekend. I will go down on Sunday or Monday evening if the water drops. Happy Easter!

Hey. Has anyone on here had any luck fishing Northerns on the river? I have heard by the GR mill is good (I know this is a walleye forum) but I figured someone may know. I've never hooked one and I hear its a great fight. If anyone knows some good places to go on the river, I would really appreciate the info.

I've heard of a few steelhead getting taken by the dam. And there's always flathead cats. I don't believe I've heard of northerns in the river but then again I rarely go that far upriver. DBLDIP would know.

Lovetofish, the spot behind the old mill at Grand Rapids use to be a very good spot for northerns. I personally have not fished for them there for quite a few years but did well back in the day. Usually it is best right after ice out, so it may be a little late, that is when the northerns run the river and ditches to spawn. Many moons ago as a kid we even caught them in Grassy creek in the middle of Perrysburg. You may still have a chance at the Mill yet this year with the water temp as low as it has been. If you go let us know how you do, they put up a fight that put walleye to shame. Fisherboy, what do you think? That is you stomping grounds?

does anyone fish smallmouth in the river? i have heard of it before but never had the chance to do it. Any info would be great

Thanks for the northern report, DBLDIP. Oh yeah, when in high school and during my twenties, I caught tons of small mouth. We would make a day of it. Just wearing tennis shoes and walking around casting to holes would always get smallies. Rebel Crawfish or other crankbaits, fake weighted worms, sometimes live bait...they all work. Just remember to fish where there is good current. Even Dr. Walleye throws back all bass.

where are some good spots to try? Around what areas of the river. Also when would be a good time to start trying

The info Dbldip said is accurate. However, my best luck for Northerns was behind the gas station in GR or the canal to the left of it. But that was when I was a kid (well really middle age). It was fun but 1 yr I fished for them too long & missed out on the early WE season. Gave up on that & now ice fish until there's no ice. I truly never hear of anyone fishing for them any more. Best I ever did was 6 1 day using chrubs.

For SM Gary at Maumee Bait would give accurate info. But the spot I like the most is Van Tassel on the south side of the river upriver from Waterville before GR. Don't believe I went last yr but the yr before I went there & had decent luck. Not great but def a lot of fun. Even a few WE during the summer.

As far as WE fishing tried for 40 minutes today. Fished fr shore at SP. Nothing caught while I was there.

Looks like more water may come .Ft Wayne up 1.6 ft,New Haven 1.5 ft but Waterville only up .2 ft since Midnight..at the house we have had 1.4" yesterday and today,,Gary Maumee Tackle was on the news this morning telling everyone He expects one more push,,But neglected to say how high the river was,and how shitty fishing is,,I guess you have to do that if you have a business depending on fishing,,Dbldip if you see the interview you will notice the Lady that interviews Gary ,,is the kind I attract, but I usually get 15 or 20,,But I speak the the lingo,,,

we might as well talk about other fishin since the water is sky high. The smallmouth fishing is usually best when the river is at summer level. I have my best luck when its really low and hit the deeper holes. Just about anywhere from Buttonwood up to the dam can be good if you find a nice hole around some riffles. You would be surprised at how the smallies hang out in the shallows after crayfish which is my favorite way to fish for them. July and August can be very productive and we catch some dandy size cats also while doing it. No one that I know keeps the smallies unless its a trophy for the wall. No reason to eat bass anyway and bass are just fun to catch. And you never know when ol Doc W will get to lose the first caught catfish contest and pucker up to the ol wiskerface!

yeah i dont keep bass....kept a largemouth once ice fishing and it didnt taste that good. Rather eat bluegill walleye or perch. How can you tell what is a good area to try for smallmouth. I caught small one hooked last year at meigs while fishing white bass but other than that nothing.

i live an hour away so i've never come out for white bass, but what do you use to fish for white bass? same carolina rig as walleyE?

White Bass
Could use a floater but I usually use a 3 way swivel with 2 small lead jigs (1/16 & 1/16 or 1/16 & 1/8).

Walleye
Tried SP fo about a hour & saw 1 shad caught. Walked down to the bridge to get to spot I liked. Trouble is there were 5 guys fishing the hole which really is only good for 4 people. Plus the spots nearby were either taken or too high for my confort level. Further on guys were standing in water with water only a few inches fr their wader top. So I sat & watched. All at once those guys hustled away. Looking to the hole with the 5 guys gave the reason. 2 fish 'protectors' were there doing whatever. While I was half assed fishing the fish 'protectors' came down & asked to see my fish. Since I had only made a few casts there was nothing to show. One asked to see my hook. Told him it was a floater so he did not look at it. Being a smart ass I asked if he needed to see my license too. Actually he was reasonable & told me no. After a few other comments about the high water & his belief the WE would be around thru the 1st half of May they left without any busts.
Went back to the hole with the 5 guys, now down to 3 (2 left there too) I started fishing. 5 casts later I saw my rod tip was broken. Really pissed me off. (Found out back at the car it really wasn't-the tip just got loose & was on my line.)
Ok as far as fish. Between the various guys that left were 15 - 17 WE. & saw a string with 2 or 3 with the guys remaining. Really did not surprised me since last yr when water was same level everyone caught fish there. Should be hot spot Sunday morning. Wish I would get out of bed to get there around 6 to 6:15. I won't however without anyone to push me. Might make my normal 8:30 run or later.
