Rain and Salt Water
The river swelled to just under 8 ft on NOAA last week. WOW. That's rare in the summertime. I don't know when catfishing will be accessible again. Maybe by the week's end? Thanks for the report Myles...nice cats! With all the rain we have gotten recently, I'm glad I got a trip in to the Outer Banks, NC. So The Closer, another buddy and I took our families to OBX. While there, the three of us got a charter at Cape Hatteras. It was a half day/inshore trip on a 25 1/2 ft center console boat with a 72 year old local guy as skipper. We fished on the sound side and never got deeper than 13 ft of water. We were casting chunks of meat on weights into the shallows for red drum. The challenge was all the pinners, or bluegills of the sea as I call them (bait stealers). It had rained hard and we even got dumped on during the trip briefly. Fishing was sadly slow. But my one buddy got a 3-4 lb red drum about 25" long and we could keep it. The one I got was just shy of the mark. The fish had to be within 22-29" range to keep if I remember right. The Closer got 2 small blue fish. Buddy got a stingray about the size of a large frizbee. And I got a little pinner. We had a blast though. It cost $375 for the 3 of us. It was a lot of fun being on the water.

Finally went to GR to fish. My mistake. The water was still too high for me to try. The location was empty. Tried a little downriver & caught 1 WB & 1 sheephead.
Hey everyone, im not asking for anyones honey holes but trying to get some more variety in the fish i catch latly i was wondeing if someone could point me in the locatons of where crappies are in the river thanks
According to Maumee Bait there are a couple of spots downtown producing. I reall don't know how true that is. I was at Maumee State Park yesterdaqy (2 crappies, 2 perch & 5 largemouths). All were small. Quit after a large largemouth (appeared to be) broke my light line. On my way home I drove thru the Mariana district & saw a # of people bottom fishing. I tried 1 of the cuts behind them with jigs. 10 minutes of that was enough for me. One of the guys fishing the river told me he saw someone with a stringer of crappies from the inlet a while back. The boat Mariana there hasw produced crappies at times (not for me however).
Lately all I seem to catch are bluegills. Going to have to start wading next week.
hey guys im new to fishing in the river. what kinds of setups do you guys use for different fish at the dam in GR? Also what do you guys use at simmons pond in Perrysburg? fished there yesterday using leaf worms and a bobber and wasn't doing good at all.
Fisherboy, thanks for the downtown update. I have never fished in that area. Elliott, the best way to go in float live bait on a weighted bobber. Nightcrawlers work well, but crayfish work even better for smallmouth. Set your bobber so the bait barely scrapes the bottom to slow it down a little in faster water. At Simmons Pond I do well for largemouth using a wacky worm...large plastic worm with a circle hook in the middle. Good luck!

Had a nice fish for dlpdip yesterday. A 14" gar. Don't know if it would have survised a trip to his house from the gas station in GR.
Did not try dam since I was passing thru & did not feel like getting wet for 30 minutes.
My son and his buddy and myself hit Buttonwood last for cats and found the level perfect. we caught at least 20 real nice cats on crawlers and crayfish. Unfortunatly the water came up overnight by 1.5 foot before Doc W could wet a line tonight. Hopefully it drops back down soon. Fisherboy didn't you have a bucket for that little gar. All they need is water to keep them alive.
